On the afternoon of 22 July 2028 the moon's shadow crosses Otago. Totality lasts up to about three minutes — but the sun will be only 8–10° above the horizon, roughly one fist held at arm's length. At that angle a single hill in the wrong place is enough to hide it completely.
This tool answers one question: from where you are standing, will terrain be in the way? It flies you to a spot in 3D, works out the sun's exact position for that location, and traces the sightline across real elevation data to the horizon.
Using it
Please treat results as a guide, not a guarantee. Elevation data has limits, and being near a mapped road is not a right of access — land may be private. Check any spot in person before the day, and never look at the partially eclipsed sun without proper eclipse glasses.
